Firm Mattresses

A firm mattress is a mattress that provides a solid, sink-free sleep surface. It is firmer than a plush, medium or medium-firm mattress but less firm than an extra-firm. Firm mattresses use materials like latex, high-density foam and high-gauge springs to achieve even weight distribution and neutral spinal alignment.

A firm mattress feels firm or rigid to the touch with a small amount of give. Providing less cushioning and contouring than a plush (soft) mattress, it comes with less of a ‘sinking-in’ sensation. You may feel more like you are sleeping on top of the mattress, rather than being hugged by it.

With manufacturers using different measures and sleepers perceiving firmness differently, firmness is subjective. However, firm mattresses fall at the top end of mattress firmness scales.

A firm mattress may be better for your back if you suffer from lower back pain as it prevents your torso from sinking in or back from overly arching. It is, therefore, considered a good choice for back and stomach sleepers.

However, a quality soft or medium mattress should still support the spine. If yours is causing back pain, it may be due to sagging caused by age or poor quality.

No level of mattress firmness is best. The right firmness level depends on a sleeper’s individual comfort preferences, sleeping position and unique needs.

For instance, medium to firm mattresses are often recommended for those with back pain. While side sleepers may benefit from the hip and shoulder cushioning and pressure relief of plush mattresses.
