A mattress topper can add extra comfort to a firm mattress or a mattress that’s getting a little old. With that said, your mattress topper will cop the brunt of spills, leaks and stains as it lies atop your bed. Life happens, and it’s not uncommon for hot drinks, urine or blood to come into contact with your mattress topper. Here’s how to clean your memory foam mattress topper, without damaging the internal foams.
Should you clean your mattress topper?
Yes! Aside from stains and spills, your mattress topper will come into contact with sweat and bodily fluids on a nightly basis. Schedule regular cleaning of your mattress topper to keep it looking, feeling and smelling its best. Mattress toppers are easy to clean and with a little regular maintenance, they can last a long time.
1. Look for mattress toppers with removable covers
When shopping for mattress toppers, look out for those that have a removable machine washable cover. This makes cleaning surface stains much easier, as you can zip off the cover and toss it in for a machine wash as normal.
2. Spot cleaning your mattress topper
For instant stains and spills, try spot cleaning your mattress topper and the foams inside. Take a spray bottle with a gentle cleaning solution or laundry detergent and blot the stain with a cloth until lifted. To minimise residual odours, sprinkle powdered baking soda over the affected area, leave for a few minutes, and remove with your vacuum cleaner. If you’ve used liquid on your mattress topper, allow plenty of time for it to air dry before using it. Sleeping on it when damp won’t be comfortable and can also trap moisture and lead to mould and mildew issues.
3. Regular cleaning of your mattress topper
Making the time to regularly freshen up your mattress topper can prolong its life and protect against mould, dust mites and other allergens. A simple clean with your vacuum cleaner across the surface of your mattress topper will help to remove nasties and keep your topper feeling fresh. Your regular vacuum or a handheld vacuum will suffice.
4. Direct sunlight cleaning
Another way to clean your mattress topper is to leave it in direct sunlight for at least 6 hours. Warm, dry days can utilise UV rays to disinfect your mattress topper and leave it feeling fresh and clean. Read more on disinfecting with UV rays here.
